Efflorescence Testing of Bricks | Efflorescence Test as per IS 3495


Efflorescence Testing is an important test used to check the quality of bricks. Efflorescence is a whitish or light-colored crystalline deposit that appears on the surface of bricks.

This deposit is mainly caused by soluble salts present in the brick. When water enters the brick, it can dissolve these salts and carry them toward the surface. After the water evaporates, the salts are left behind on the brick surface as a crystalline deposit.

In India, the Efflorescence Test for burnt clay building bricks is carried out as per IS 3495 (Part 3):2019.


How to Perform Efflorescence Testing?

For Efflorescence Testing, brick specimens and a shallow flat-bottom dish are generally required. In this test, the bricks are placed in contact with water and the salt deposits formed on their exposed surfaces are observed.

1. Select the Brick Samples

Select representative brick specimens for the Efflorescence Test. Clean the surface of the bricks properly so that dust, dirt or other external materials are not mistaken for efflorescence.

2. Fill the Dish with Distilled Water

Take a clean, shallow flat-bottom dish and fill it with distilled water. Place the bricks in such a way that approximately 25 mm of the brick is immersed in water.


3. Allow the Bricks to Absorb Water

The bricks will absorb water through their pores. Due to capillary action, water moves upward through the pores of the brick.

After some time, the water in the dish will be absorbed by the bricks.


4. Add Water Again

When the brick has absorbed the water and its surface appears dry, add distilled water again as required.

During this process, soluble salts may start appearing on the exposed surface of the bricks.

5. Examine the Brick Surface

After the second evaporation of water, examine the exposed surface of the bricks.

The amount and appearance of salt deposits are then used to classify the Efflorescence into different categories.


Efflorescence Test Results

The results of the Efflorescence Test are generally classified into the following categories:


1. Nil Efflorescence

When there is no perceptible salt deposit  on the surface of the brick, the brick is classified as having Nil Efflorescence .

2. Slight Efflorescence

When a thin salt deposit appears on a small portion of the exposed surface and the coverage is approximately up to 10%, it is classified as Slight Efflorescence.

3. Moderate Efflorescence

When the salt deposit is more noticeable and affects approximately up to 50% of the exposed surface, but there is no powdering or flaking of the surface, it is classified as Moderate Efflorescence.

4. Heavy Efflorescence


When a heavy salt deposit appears on 50% or more of the exposed surface, but there is no powdering or flaking, it is classified as Heavy Efflorescence.


5. Serious Efflorescence

When heavy salt deposits are accompanied by powdering and/or flaking of the brick surface, the result is classified as Serious Efflorescence.

This test helps determine the extent of soluble salt deposits present in the bricks.

However, it is not technically correct to say that bricks with more than 50% efflorescence are automatically "dangerous." The suitability of bricks should be determined according to the applicable specification, project requirements and overall brick quality.

Why is Efflorescence Important in Bricks?

Efflorescence is mainly associated with soluble salts and moisture movement in bricks and masonry.

Excessive efflorescence can affect the appearance of brickwork and, in severe cases, may be associated with surface deterioration such as powdering or flaking.

It is important to note that efflorescence itself does not cause groundwater movement. Instead, groundwater, dampness, leakage or other sources of moisture can introduce water into masonry. This water may carry soluble salts toward the surface, where they remain after evaporation.


Main Causes of Efflorescence

The major causes of Efflorescence in bricks include:

ЁЯСЙ Moisture entering the bricks.

ЁЯСЙ Groundwater or dampness.

ЁЯСЙ Poor drainage arrangements.

ЁЯСЙ Water leakage through walls.

ЁЯСЙ Capillary movement of water through masonry.

ЁЯСЙ Soluble salts present in construction materials.


How to Prevent Efflorescence?

The problem of Efflorescence in buildings can be reduced by following these measures:

ЁЯСЙ Use good-quality bricks.

ЁЯСЙ Protect brickwork from continuous moisture exposure.

ЁЯСЙ Provide proper damp-proofing.

ЁЯСЙ Ensure proper groundwater and rainwater drainage.

ЁЯСЙ Repair water leakage in walls.

ЁЯСЙ Store construction materials properly and protect them from moisture.

ЁЯСЙ Use suitable waterproofing measures wherever required.


Conclusion

Efflorescence Testing is an important part of brick quality testing. The test helps determine the extent of soluble salt deposits that appear on the surface of bricks due to moisture movement and evaporation.

After testing, Efflorescence is classified into Nil, Slight, Moderate, Heavy and Serious categories.

Therefore, while selecting bricks for construction work, it is important to consider not only their compressive strength and water absorption, but also their Efflorescence characteristics.
